Improve Your Quality of Life with Dental Implants

Senior couple smilingPatients with missing teeth, or who want to upgrade their traditional dentures, can greatly benefit from the placement and restoration of dental implants at our Lancaster office. Implants are surgically inserted in the jawbone, mimicking the function of tooth roots to provide unparalleled support for dental crowns, bridges, or dentures. If you would like to learn more about how dental implants offer the absolute best support for your prosthetic teeth, contact our office today to schedule a consultation with Dr. Palmieri.

What Are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

One implant can anchor a single replacement tooth, or several implants can hold a bridge or denture in place. Made of a biocompatible metal called titanium, implants are securely anchored in the jawbone, unlike traditional restorations that rely on healthy teeth or adhesives for retention. For this reason, implant patients can have the peace of mind knowing that their dentures will not slip out of place when they speak or chew. For patients who maintain good oral health, dental implants can last a lifetime. Implant patients should brush, floss, and attend regular dental checkups and cleanings – the same recommendations for our patients with natural teeth.

Dental implants also offer a benefit that no other form of restoration boasts. Dental implants stimulate the jawbone, keeping it strong and healthy. With traditional methods of restoration support, the body will begin to absorb the bone cells where a tooth root is missing. Because dental implants mimic tooth roots, they effectively prevent jawbone atrophy and the aged look that accompanies it.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Implants?

In order to be considered a good candidate for dental implants, you should be in good general and oral health and have sufficient jawbone density. Patients with poor bone density may first need a bone graft. As a dentist offering a full scope of implant services, Dr. Palmieri can perform bone grafts and other advanced therapies in preparation for your dental implants. As part of your consultation, you can discuss any procedures that need to be performed before you receive your implants, as well as which type of implants are right for you. Some of our patients may benefit from mini implants, which feature a smaller post and reduced recovery time, or the All-on-4® method that uses just four implants to secure a denture.

What Is Involved in Implant Placement?

After you consultation, Dr. Palmieri may send you to an imaging center to aid in the planning phase of your case. This advanced imagery is used to ensure precise placement of your implants. Prior to your surgery, you can receive either nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation to help you relax throughout the procedure. For traditional implants, you will typically be provided with a temporary prosthetic that can be worn until your next surgery, which will be performed about three to six months later. During this period of time, your implant will fuse to your jawbone during a process called osseointegration.

After healing is complete, you will return to our office to have your abutments placed. Finally, your custom-designed, natural-looking crown, bridge, partial, or denture will be secured.
