Regain Function and Confidence with Custom Dentures
Dentures have a long tradition of restoring function and appearance to patients missing most or all of their teeth. These restorations can replace a full arch of teeth and return the ability to speak, eat, and enjoy a natural-looking smile. With the addition of dental implants, patients can now experience much greater stability and comfort from their dentures. In Lancaster, PA, Dr. Gilbert Palmieri offers a variety of implant-supported dentures that are both attractive and incredibly stable. Implants are tiny titanium posts that are surgically inserted in the jaw and restored with a custom dental prosthetic. If missing teeth are compromising your smile, we can help. Traditional dentures are held in place by a combination of suction and adhesive. The dentist can place them in your mouth right after any remaining teeth are removed (immediate denture) or after the tissues have healed (conventional denture). With an immediate denture, the patient does not have to go without teeth during the healing period. However, the denture will need to be adjusted after healing is complete in order for it to fit properly. Alternatively, if the patient still has a few healthy teeth, the dentist may leave them in place and recommend an overdenture. This type of denture fits over the remaining natural teeth, which support the prosthetic and also help retain mass in the jawbone.
Implant-supported dentures are similar to overdentures, except the implant posts provide support instead of natural teeth. When the biocompatible titanium posts are surgically placed in the jaw, they fuse with the bone during the healing process. Once the posts are stabilized and restored with a dental prosthetic, they function like tooth roots to support the replacement teeth and retain bone mass. Major benefits to this type of restoration include:
- Traditional dentures and tooth-supported overdentures must be taken out to be cleaned and maintained. Implant-supported dentures can be cared for just like natural teeth with simple brushing and flossing.
- Traditional dentures are notorious for slipping and shifting out of place. Overdentures are somewhat better, but they can still move around. Implant-supported dentures are as stable as natural teeth and will never move out of place, allowing you to talk, laugh, and smile with confidence.
- Implant-supported dentures feel like your own teeth. You can comfortably bite and chew any kind of food you like, including apples and steak. Unlike traditional dentures, they do not interfere with your taste by covering the roof of your mouth.
Comprehensive Treatment from an Expert
Dr. Palmieri has undergone intensive training in implant dentistry. While the majority of general dentists refer the placement of dental implants out to specialists, Dr. Palmieri can provide comprehensive implant treatment, from start to finish, under one roof. This is not only more convenient for our patients, but also allows us to hold your care to a high standard throughout the treatment process.
Some patients will require a procedure to strengthen or build up their jaw prior to their implant placement. Dr. Palmieri can also perform preparatory treatments, which include bone grafting, sinus lift, socket graft, and ridge augmentation. Another option for patients with reduced bone quality and density is the All-on-4® implant-supported denture system. This innovative procedure allows a full denture to be held in place with as few as four dental implants.
With years of experience and specialized training, Dr. Palmieri can find a customized implant-supported solution that works for you. To schedule a personal denture consultation, please contact us today.
