Improve Your Candidacy for Implants with a Bone Grafting Procedure
Many restorative dentistry patients would like to have dental implants placed to return form and function to their smiles, but lack the necessary jawbone strength. Dr. Gilbert Palmieri can perform bone grafting procedures for patients in Lancaster, PA, to help restore the density needed to support these titanium posts. The procedure can greatly help patients who suffer the effects of bone atrophy, which often results from long-term tooth loss. If you are missing teeth and would like to learn more about how bone grafting can improve your candidacy for dental implants, please contact our practice to make an appointment with Dr. Palmieri.
The Bone Grafting Procedure
When you come into our office for your dental implant consultation, Dr. Palmieri will perform a thorough evaluation of your teeth, gums, and the supporting structures to determine your candidacy. We may send you to imaging center to obtain detailed 3-D pictures of your underlying bone structure to determine if bone grafting or another procedure will be required before scheduling your implant placement surgery.
If Dr. Palmieri determines that bone grafting is necessary, these advanced images will be used to help plan and guide both your grafting procedure and your implant placement. On the day of your procedure, you will be made comfortable with sedation. A local anesthetic will also be applied to minimize your discomfort. Dr. Palmieri will begin your procedure by making an incision in the gum line to gain access to the jawbone. He will then place bone from another area of your body, tissue from a donor, or synthetic grafting material. This will create an adequate amount of dense, healthy bone tissue to support the dental implants. Dr. Palmieri will complete your surgery by suturing the incisions closed and providing you with post-operative instructions for your recovery.
The new donor tissue or grafting material will bond and fuse with your jawbone, creating a strong foundation to support your dental implants.
Over the next several months, the new donor tissue or grafting material will bond and fuse with your jawbone. This will create a suitable foundation to support your dental implants. Dr. Palmieri may also place concentrated growth factors to aid in recovery, healing, and bone formation.
Sinus Lift and Ridge Augmentation
Dr. Palmieri is a highly skilled oral surgeon, and we pride ourselves in our ability to perform all aspects of your treatment in one location. In addition to bone grafting, he can also perform a sinus lift for patients who are missing teeth from the back part of the upper jaw. To place implants in this location, it is often necessary to lift the sinus floor to prepare the bone for the titanium posts. This bone grafting procedure is accomplished by placing material into the maxillary sinus and allowing it to fuse with the bone to create space for the dental implant. If your alveolar ridge is not wide enough to support an implant, Dr. Palmieri can also perform ridge augmentation surgery. This type of bone graft creates more space in order to accommodate the titanium post with a stable foundation. The procedure can greatly reduce the risk of implant failure.
