Why Are My Teeth Stained?
The type of stain or discoloration on a tooth falls into two categories: extrinsic, which refers to staining on the outside of the tooth, and intrinsic, which is discoloration inside the tooth that is usually more difficult to remove. There are a multitude of reasons why teeth become stained or discolored:
Age - As we get older, the outer layer of enamel on our teeth can take on a yellowish tint.
Foods & Drinks - Coffee, tea, soda, red wine, berries, and other darkly colored foods and drinks can stain teeth over time.
Medications - Some antibiotics, antihistamines, and high-blood pressure medications can cause tooth discoloration.
Genetics - Some people just have naturally thinner and more translucent tooth enamel.
Poor Dental Hygiene - Plaque and tartar buildup can cause teeth to become discolored.
Tobacco - Both smoking and chewing tobacco can significantly stain teeth over time.
How Does In-Office Teeth Whitening Work?
Dr. Palmieri will first examine your teeth and gums to determine if you will benefit from Philips Zoom!®. If teeth whitening is right for you, you will first undergo a regular teeth cleaning. Next, your lips and gums will be covered, leaving your teeth exposed for the application of a hydrogen peroxide whitening gel. A light will be applied to activate the gel, penetrating tooth enamel and reducing stains and discoloration. The gel is typically applied for three 15-minute sessions for a total treatment time of 45 minutes. During this time, you can watch television, listen to music, or just relax. After the last session, a sensitivity-reducing gel will be applied to the teeth. To keep your smile white, Dr. Palmieri will provide a touch-up kit and instructions for home use.
How Do I Whiten My Teeth at Home?
If you choose to whiten your teeth at home, Dr. Palmieri can offer you a take-home Zoom!® DayWhite or Zoom!® NiteWhite kit. Dr. Palmieri will first make a mold of your teeth to fabricate a custom tray that fits your teeth snugly. He will explain how to use the kit, which usually requires placing the tray over your teeth for an hour each day for up to two weeks. Using the power of a professional-grade bleaching gel, our take-home kits can brighten teeth several shades whiter than over-the-counter options.
Smiles for Life
Dr. Palmieri is a proud supporter of the Crown Council’s Smiles for Life program. This charitable program raises funds for seriously ill children. When a patient donates more than $250 to the organization, Dr. Palmieri will provide a free take-home teeth whitening treatment. Half of each donation goes to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Smiles for Life, and the other half goes to the Lancaster-based charity S. June Smith Center.
